There may be another important entry in the franchise.
Bandai Namco recently teased what is likely to be Tekken 8 in the form of a trailer following the Tekken 7 Grand Finals at EVO 2022. The fighting game tournament takes place this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. The developers also announced that Tekken 7 will be getting a brand new combat update later this month on August 17.
The trailer starts with Kazuya taking Heihachi to the edge of a cliff, then cuts to a close-up of Mishima. Then the word “ready” briefly came to the side, suggesting that an official announcement from Bandai Namco may be imminent. However, there is no explanation as to whether this is for a new entry in the Tekken series or something else entirely different.
Some have suggested that, given the amount of time dedicated to the first entry in the EVO 2022 Tekken series, the trailer should be taken as an indication that Bandai Namco is currently in the midst of a reboot or possibly a remake. The developers didn’t provide further details, to the delight and dismay of fighting game fans.
The latest game in the series, Tekken 7, was released in the arcade version on March 18, 2015. Tekken 7 was released worldwide on June 2, 2017, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game became a commercial success in just a few months on the part of players and critics alike. Tekken 7 has now sold over 9 million copies, breaking the franchise record previously held by Tekken 3.
Tekken 7 has been a mainstay at festivals like fighting game tournaments and EVO for years. Pros and casual gamers alike are eagerly awaiting the sequel, eager to see where Bandai Namco gets the franchise next.
