The Mets surged to the National League East lead this summer without the services of the dominant Jacob deGrom. With the two-time Cy Young winner back on the field, they looked even more dangerous.
DeGrom was nearly unbeatable against the Warriors on Sunday. He didn’t allow a base runner until the sixth inning, eventually finishing with 12 strikeouts and two allowed two-run homers in 5 2/3 innings for his first win of the season. The show gave him 1,523 career strikeouts, the most in MLB history in the first 200 career games of a pitcher.
The Mets went on to win 5-2, taking four of five from Atlanta over the weekend and extending their division lead to 6.5 games.

In Sunday’s win, deGrom produced 25 swings on just 76 pitches. Facing just six of the 19 batters who were able to put the ball into play, his fastball hit 21 at 99 mph and topped out at 101.6 mph. After making his debut against the Nationals on Tuesday, deGrom has allowed just five runners for 18 hitters in 10 2/3 frames.
Since the start of 2018, DeGrom has a 1.95 ERA in 93 games and 792 strikeouts in 591 2/3 innings. After missing the start of the season for four months, he appears to be picking up where he left off.
