There’s been a lot of discussion about whether Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Reunion is a remake, a remake, or something in between. There’s no real universal standard for what you could call a remake, but Capcom’s 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake is considered by many to be the gold standard for AAA studios.
In short, if it’s been remastered from the ground up, with new features and improvements, it’s considered a remake; but if it’s only made with minor tweaks to improve the visuals, it’s a remake.
However, Tetsuya Nomura, creative producer at Crisis Core Reunion, says things are more complicated than that. According to him, the developers have added a lot to it so that it can be considered a remake, but it’s not a full remake either.That’s why they chose the word reunion. he explained in an interview in full view (thanks, Nintendo Life).
“We felt differently about it because we weren’t sure the best way to describe the project,” he said. “At one point, there was a discussion about calling it a ‘remake’ or a ‘remaster.'” I think the product is more Close to the definition of a remake, as the story hasn’t changed at all and it’s always the same game.
“But on the technical side, the graphics have been completely updated, the models have been reworked from the ground up, many of the original’s only subtitled scenes are now dubbed, and the combat system has been updated,” he continued. “We’re still not sure about the term that better describes the game, which is why we use ‘reunion.’ It’s really complicated because it’s not just a remake, but it’s not a full remake at the same time.”
So, all in all, Nomura believes that the treatment given by “Crisis Reunion” can neither be regarded as a remake, nor can it be said to be a complete remake.Maybe the nomenclature needs to change, but the idea of calling it reunion is a smart one – when you have context.
