I compared the ice cream cakes from Baskin-Robbins, Cold Stone Creamery and Dairy Queen.

I buy round pre-made cakes from Baskin-Robbins, Dairy Queen and Cold Stone Creamery.

As a professional baker, I do make and eat a lot of cakes, and I’ve paired a lot of slices with a scoop of ice cream.

But I haven’t had an ice cream cake in at least 10 years, and I wanted to test three popular chains — Dairy Queen, Cold Stone Creamery, and Baskin-Robbins.

I chose some kind of vanilla chocolate combo at each location.

To be fair, I walked into each store without an order to see what was available from the freezer.

Everywhere, I picked the smallest round ice cream cake, which combines chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Cold Stone Creamery ice cream cakes are beautifully decorated.

At Cold Stone Creamery, I bought a The Tall, Dark & Delicious ice cream cake.

Molly Allen

This Tall, dark and delicious is one of the chain’s signature ice cream cakes, which means it can be taken out of the freezer almost at any time. An 8-inch round cake sells for $39.95.

The layers of this cake are as follows: devil cake, chocolate Oreo ice cream, more devil cake and sweet cream ice cream with chocolate cake pieces. The entire cake is also covered in fluffy whipped frosting and fudge ganache.

After buying the cake and putting it in the fridge at home, the ganache forms a layer of moisture that makes it look less pretty.

Cold Stone Cream Cake tastes great, but a little too much for me.

Cold Stone Creamery knows how to make ice cream cakes – but it’s really decadent.

Molly Allen

Cold Stone is known for its super creamy ice cream, which is reflected in this cake.

Chocolate ice cream is very tasty and smooth. The chocolate cake tasted great and wasn’t too dry.

The combination of cake and ice cream is perfectly balanced. I also love adding whipped toppings and a luscious chocolate ganache.

While delicious, I found this cake to be a bit over the top. I’m a total chocolate lover, but there seems to be too much going on here.

Baskin-Robbins cake is beautifully decorated.

At my local Baskin Robbins, I pull out an Oreo cookie cake from the freezer. 9-inch round cake for $45.99.

I also appreciate that one of the staff asked me if I wanted to fill it up with dry ice for $1 to keep it extra cool.

The cake looks lovely with a dollop of whipped toppings, chocolate drizzle and fondant border.

But the taste of Baskin Robbins cake put me off.

Unfortunately, I don’t think the amazing look of the Baskin Robbins cake matches the taste.

Molly Allen

Inside, the cake is an extra thick layer of chocolate cake and a thick layer of cookies and cream ice cream.

The cake layers were very dry and almost unpalatable. The cookies and cream ice cream went well together, but I was impressed with the whole dessert.

Due to the structure of this cake – two huge layers, including the melted one – it was difficult to cut. It also seemed to melt and fall apart quickly after I only sliced one slice.

I was especially disappointed as this cake was the most expensive.

The dairy queen cake looks the prettiest.

Dairy Queen’s Oreo Blizzard Cake looks gorgeous.

Molly Allen

At Dairy Queen, I chose one Oreo Blizzard Cake I got it straight from the freezer at the store.

It’s a gorgeous look with details on the edges, piping borders, crushed Oreo cookies and chocolate drizzle.

I thought it was the most appealing of the three cakes, which surprised me even more because it was also the cheapest. 8-inch round cake for $28.99.

The taste and texture of the Dairy Queen Cake is incredible.

Dairy Queen Cake has many delicious layers.

Molly Allen

This ice cream cake does so many things in the best possible way.

It has a layer of classic vanilla fudge, a layer of fudge and crunchy chocolate chips, and a layer of Oreo Blizzard. A whipped topping and a drizzle of chocolate finish it off.

Super tasty. The flavor combination is very nostalgic.

No actual cake is included in this option, but I think it suits it better. The taste and texture are very interesting.

Overall, each cake is beautiful and easy to buy.

Three slice ice cream cake

Any of these ice cream cakes will be a party hit.

Molly Allen

For anyone who forgets to order a cake for a birthday party, I can definitely see any of these chains as heroes.

Impressively, all of these cakes are ready for me to snap up from every ice cream chain. No need to order in advance.

It’s also worth mentioning that all three ice cream chains have an incredible selection of flavors. If you order ahead, you can choose from almost any flavor of cake and ice cream combo. You can also customize decorations.

However, when it comes to the flavor, value and appearance of these pre-made cakes, I have one winner in mind.

To my surprise, Dairy Queen’s ice cream cake is my favorite.

Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake doesn’t even need an actual cake.

Molly Allen

I would definitely buy the Dairy Queen cake again because it has so many great textures and flavors.

I don’t think it would be my favorite, especially since Dairy Queen isn’t usually one of my go-to places for dessert, and this option doesn’t include actual cakes.

or even better? This is the most affordable of the three ice cream cakes I’ve tried.

I will definitely buy another ice cream cake from Stone Cold, but would like to try a different flavor, maybe not as strong and overwhelming. I’d love to try another Baskin Robbins ice cream cake — especially if it’s custom made with my favorite flavor — but I won’t be buying Oreos again.
