America hasDo more to stop the stress of weeks break out. The U.S. leads the world in infections, with demand for the monkeypox vaccine outstripping supply, with cases roughly doubling every week in some states.
Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House COVID response coordinator who is assisting with the monkeypox response, told the CBS Morning News that declaring a public health emergency will help speed up vaccination, treatment and data collection to track the outbreak.
“Thank goodness no one has died, so we’re still at some stage of this outbreak, and I do believe that while it’s very serious, it’s not the cause of widespread panic,” Dr Jia said.
Cases in the U.S. have surpassed 7,100, with more than 500 confirmed cases reported in six states.
“Our goal remains to eliminate this virus – to control it and eventually eliminate it. In terms of vaccines, we have greatly increased the number of vaccines we source from abroad,” Dr Jha said. “There’s a small company in Denmark that makes these vaccines. We’re getting more vaccines than the rest of the world combined. We’re mainly targeting these vaccines to communities where this virus is spreading.”
The vast majority of cases so far have been found among men who have sex with men, but health officials stress that anyone can be infected.at least five children and onehave been infected with the virus.
Monkeypox is mainly spread through skin-to-skin contact or contact with contaminated clothing or bedding, but it can also be spread through prolonged close contact with respiratory droplets.
Dr Jha stressed that most cases were transmitted through skin-to-skin contact.
“There are theoretical risks and then reality,” he said. “So far, 98% of cases have occurred in gay and bisexual men. It’s mainly spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact.”
Although it is rarely fatal, patients say monkeypox is distressing.
San Francisco, the first major city to declare a public health emergency, this week saw long lines around the block outside Zuckerberg General Hospital waiting to be vaccinated. In Washington state, some residents even drove to Canada to get injections.
Dr Jha said those seeking a vaccine should consult their local health department.
“Almost every state has a monkeypox website where you can go and it will tell you where the vaccine is,” he said.
