ROME – Ukraine is crying and bleeding over “the unequal battle with the Russian occupiers,” Ukrainian Major Sviatoslav Shevchuk announced in a video message on Friday.

Ukrainian people “defend their homeland in this great, unjust, senseless and blasphemous war”, Say Shevchuk, President of the Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine.

In his message, the archbishop documented the recent suffering of his people, including the heavy shelling of the cities of Kharkiv, Nikolayev and Zaporozhye from Thursday to Friday.

“The enemy launched a large rocket attack on the city of Toretsk in the Donetsk region, hitting a bus stop where civilians were waiting for transport. Many people were killed and wounded,” Shevchuk said.

“Orthodox churches were vandalized and priests were seriously injured. This desecration is really beyond any common sense,” he added.

Despite the atrocities committed against her, Ukraine “is learning to overcome and defend her right to existence and freedom with the power of God,” he said, noting that various international bodies have indicated that “the invaders are losing the strategic initiative.”

“Ukrainians are successfully defending their land. So today we say: Ukraine stands! Ukraine is fighting! Ukraine is praying!” he said.

The Archbishop also expressed his gratitude and recognition to the Ukrainian emergency services who have been tirelessly carrying out rescue missions.

“We see our cities and villages burning every day. Our firefighters have worked tirelessly to put out these fires,” he said. “We saw how the enemy systematically destroyed infrastructure in large cities, launching rocket attacks on cities and civilians.”

“Our rescuers are mercilessly removing the rubble and taking from under the rubble and rescuing those who are there,” he added.

“Today, on behalf of our entire church, I want to say to our firefighters, paramedics, rescue workers and utility workers of all kinds: Thank you so much!” Shevchuk said. “We thank you for your heroic service, even sacrificing your own life, so that cities and villages will no longer lack electricity and gas.”

“We thank you for your eagerness to help and to be the first-hand help from God and Ukraine that extends to those who have fallen victim to the Russian occupiers,” he declared.

“May the Lord God bless you and reward you for all your heroic service to your people and your country,” he said.
