1907 – Walter Johnson wins his first of 417 wins, leading the Washington Senators to a 7-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians.
1922 – Ken Williams of the St. Louis Browns hits two home runs in the sixth inning win over the Washington Senators.
1923 – Cleveland’s Frank Ball goes 6 for 6 with doubles and five singles as the Indians beat the Washington Senators 22-2.
1956 – The largest crowd in minor league history of 57,000 watch 50-year-old Miami native Satchel Paige beat Columbus in the Orange Bowl International League game.
1963 – Jim Hickman of the New York Mets defeats the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 at the polo field. Hickman’s bikes came in the order of single-double triple-home runs.
1985 – A strike by the Major League Baseball Players Association ends with the announcement of a tentative agreement. The season resumes on August 8.
1999 – Wade Boggs becomes the first player to hit his 3,000th home run with a two-run run in Tampa Bay’s 15-10 loss to Cleveland. Boggs already had a pair of RBI singles when he hit Chris Haney’s homer in the sixth inning.
2004 – Greg Marduks becomes the 22nd pitcher in major league history to reach 300 wins, leading the Chicago Cubs to an 8-4 victory over San Francisco.
2007 – San Francisco’s Barry Bonds hits No. 756, breaking Hank Aaron’s legendary record, hits a fifth-inning home run, 84-mph fastball from Washington’s Mike Bar Chick. Commissioner Bud Selig and Aaron were notably absent. The Nationals won 8-6.
2016 – Ichiro Suzuki hits his 3,000th major league 3-pointer, becoming the 30th player to reach the milestone in the Miami Marlins’ 10-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
2016 — Manny Machado becomes the second player in major league history to hit a home run in the first, second and third innings, hitting a career-high seven in a 10-2 win over Chicago.
2018 – Bartolo Colon of Texas becomes Latin America’s highest winning pitcher in Rangers’ 11-4 win over Seattle Mariners. After six attempts, the 45-year-old right-hander clinched his 246th career win, eventually breaking a tie with Nicaragua’s Denis Martinez. Colon gave up four and eight hits in seven innings and improved his record to 6-10.
2021 – Host nation Japan beat the United States 2-0 to win its first gold medal in Olympic baseball history.
