A Brazilian man was reportedly hospitalized after undergoing a nose job himself, prompting YouTube to remove a video tutorial on DIY rhinoplasty.
The city’s health department told Insider that the unnamed man was seen at the Campo Limpo emergency center in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on July 21.
After a visit to the emergency room after completing a DIY rhinoplasty, the on-site mental health team visited the patient, who was then referred to the oral and maxillofacial team, the department said.
“The team cleaned and bandaged the wound and provided guidance on necessary care,” the health department said in an email.
He was discharged from the hospital the same day.
The man was referred to an oral and maxillofacial specialist team and psychological services for long-term care.
Brazilian media G1 reports Patients watched YouTube tutorials on how to perform rhinoplasty at home, so replicated procedures that only trained medical professionals should perform.
The city health department told Insider it has no information on this. YouTube did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.
However, G1 reported that shortly after the hospitalization became public, YouTube removed a video tutorial on a DIY nose job. G1 also said YouTube has since imposed an age limit on videos showing viewers how to perform less invasive nose surgery on themselves.
According to doctors interviewed by G1, having a nose job on oneself can lead to serious complications such as necrosis, infection, nasal congestion and anaphylactic shock.
