10 years after Skullgirls’ launch, the game’s main antagonist, Mary, will finally become a playable character in 2023, developer Hidden Variable Studios announced Friday. During EVO 2022, the developer released a trailer confirming that the character will fill the last spot on Skullgirls 2nd Encore’s Season 1 pass, adding that she’ll also be coming to Skullgirls Mobile.

The trailer itself doesn’t feature any action shots of the characters, but it does depict Mary talking to her close friend Peacock – known as Patricia.

In the 10 years since Skullgirls launched, Mary has been a sought-after character, both for gameplay and story reasons. The developers of Skullgirls have said before To tell the game’s classic story, Umbrella, Black Dahlia, and Mary need to be playable. Interestingly, with Mary’s unveiling, all three characters will be part of the game’s season pass.

Originally released in 2012, Skullgirls has undergone several updates and re-releases since, and the current version of the game is Skullgirls 2nd Encore. The game has traded hands between multiple publishers and developers throughout its lifespan, but has also developed a large, dedicated, and competitive following.

Skullgirls is one of several games at EVO 2022, titled Day 1 of the event. Famous fighting game player SonicFox finally took the gold as the EVO 2022 Skullgirls champion, taking a victory against the dekillsage.

So far, EVO 2022 has seen many other notable fighting game announcements. Arcade1Up has revealed that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will get its first official re-release since it was delisted via licensed arcade cabinets, and Capcom has revealed two new reviewers coming to Street Fighter 6: Delicious Steve and James Chen.
