The Utah Jazz have many viable reasons to explore a Donovan Mitchell trade. Even if they have Rudy Gobert, they’ve proven multiple times that they’re incapable of winning a championship. Without him, they have no obvious way to rebuild their contenders until Mitchell becomes a free agent in 2025. Outside free agents rarely want to come to Utah. Even if they do, the Jazz have no salary cap flexibility this offseason. Their only viable path forward is through the draft. Trading Mitchell would get a whole bunch of draft picks.

The dream scenario of any draft pick is to find a player like Mitchell. That’s what critics of a possible Mitchell deal are saying. Why trade him for a player who may never be as good?Andy Larson Salt Lake Tribune One explanation is offered: The entire NBA seems to believe that Mitchell is about to be out. “The overwhelming feeling within the league is that Mitchell will likely sign outside of Utah at the first available opportunity in 2025,” Larson reports, and that he would prefer to play in a larger market.

According to Larson, Mitchell considers New York his home. He’s been there for most of the offseason, and it’s no coincidence that the Knicks have been by far the most aggressive team to try to trade him. So far, no package has materialized, but with eight tradable first-round picks, a deal is sure to come.

Mitchell is also reportedly interested in playing in Miami. The way they got him was a little more complicated. While they could offer young guard Tyler Herro in a trade, they currently only have two tradable first-round picks. They could get as many as three with some maneuvering, and they could also offer a couple of first-round trades, but in the end they couldn’t offer what the Knicks could.

Regardless of where he lands, it’s clear that Mitchell doesn’t intend to spend his career with the Jazz. Whether in the offseason or in future trades, the Jazz appear to have embraced the need for a rebuild.
