One of the most annoying things about the MCU is the complete homogeneity of Marvel superhero appearances. You can see it in Marvel’s Avengers game, where the default skin appears to have been changed enough to avoid copyright issues. Marvel’s Spider-Man has also swapped out the original Peter Parker model for one that looks a bit like Tom Holland.
However, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy consciously created their own character designs. That’s why Starlord looks like Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, Gamora looks closer to her comic book avatar, Drax looks like a fanboy Jason Statham rather than Dave Bautista, and Rocket…still looks a lot like a Talking raccoon – but there’s a chance he won’t.
as found game radar, art director Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc explained to Edge Magazine that the team “doesn’t want to be influenced by Marvel. Because that’s the best way to make generic or copy.” Gauthier-Leblanc said the visuals were inspired by 3D art from the ’90s game. This is to avoid looking like an MCU piece, or looking like the Guardians of the movie.
Marvel totally agrees with this, but there are some early ideas that need to be reworked. “We had a fat Drax. Our first version of Star-Lord was like an astronaut, wearing almost a full astronaut suit,” Gauthier-Leblanc said. “And we had a human-sized rocket, which was weird. So, yeah, we freaked them out for the first time.”
However, when the second tone came, everyone agreed. Nonetheless, there are still areas that need work. Gamora’s character in particular, according to narrative director Marie DeMarre, who mentioned that “for a long time, we’ve been trying to really understand Gamora. She’s the deadliest woman in the galaxy – but what does that mean?”
To finally bring the entire team together, the developers introduced the Huddle mechanism.”The idea was that Star-Lord would be a bit tacky and actually take some of the lyrics as his own,” said composer Richard Jacques. “And then we had this song that I wrote. [plays] Under it really cheers the team up and the whole thing comes together and really embodies the identity of Star-Lord. ”
