Kenya’s Mary Moraa beat Keely Hodgkinson and Laura Muir in an Anglo-Scottish duel to claim the 800m gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old world bronze medalist went straight to Hodgkinson at home with incredible speed, winning in 1 minute 57.07 seconds.

Scotland’s Muir won bronze with a one-hundredth of a second lead over Jamaica’s Nato Yagul.

Muir will make another great run in the 1500m final on Sunday.

However, Hodgkinson said she was “furious” to miss out on her first international title in front of a home crowd.

“I’m not quite sure what happened, it happened so fast,” the world and Olympic silver medallist told BBC Sport.

“I struggled a bit on the first lap, maybe I can be a little bit more patient.

“There are positives, but I want gold, so I’m pissed. I want to be on the podium in front of my hometown crowd.

“Unfortunately, I got the silver medal again. But I have one more chance.”

Hodgkinson, like Muir, is part of the British squad that travels to Munich for the European Championships next week.

Hodgkinson started by congratulating Moore as the latter endured a tense wait to find out she had beaten Jamaica’s Guler for bronze

They, like the winner, will no doubt look back on the exciting race before arriving in Germany.

Mora initially appeared to misjudge his pace, trotting out of the crowd for the opening 300m before slowing down at the next clock.

But there was still plenty of tingling left in her leg, and as Hodgkinson and Muir tried to increase the pressure 200 metres from home, Mora tracked them down and found a cog beyond the two.

Moraa gleefully performed a celebratory jig for the TV cameras as Hodgkinson and Muir collapsed on the track after the line.

Aside from U.S. Olympic and world champion Athing Mu, Mora is the only athlete to beat Hodgkinson over 800 meters this year.

She won at home with the same ferocious kick in Stockholm in June, and the former 400m specialist, who only changed two laps last year, looked set to turn the rivalry between Mu and Hodgkinson into a three-man show. .

“Oh my gosh, these girls are fast,” Moore told BBC Sport after trailing Hodgkinson by 0.47 seconds in 1:57.87.

“I was fourth with 100 meters left and I was like ‘no way’.

“Guys, that’s why if your coach says run to the finish line, you run to the finish line.”

Earlier in the evening, Jamaica’s Janieve Russell kept her composure to defend her 400m hurdles title as compatriot Rushell Clayton was quick out and disappeared at a faster pace.Clayton is fourth, one place ahead of England’s Jesse Knight
