Gallup, NM — A man in a large SUV drove through a parade in New Mexico on Thursday, injuring multiple people, including two police officers.

State Police Lieutenant Mark Soriano said no one was killed in the Gallup incident and he could not elaborate on the extent of the injuries, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

New Mexico police said on Twitter that the driver had been taken into custody and that they were investigating the incident.

“Multiple injuries, including two Gallup Police Department officers, are being treated at the scene,” the tweet said.

Videos posted on social media showed vehicles driving into the crowd and people scrambling to get out of the way.

The parade is part of the Gallup Intertribal Ritual Celebration, established in 1922 to honor Native American and Indigenous heritage.

Jonathan Nez, the president of the Navajo Nation, who was there, said he and his party members could be hit if they didn’t respond quickly, CBS Albuquerque subsidiary KRQE-TV reports.

“We were in the path of the vehicle. Thank God, the people around me, our team members or council representatives. Didn’t get hit by a vehicle,” Nez said in a statement shortly after the incident.
