Sea of Thieves’ big captain update is finally live as part of Season 7, and players are discovering a huge surprise benefit of being a ship owner: there’s a new and faster way to transport treasure from your ship, which changes the way loot is sold less stressful.
The most anxiety-provoking part of playing Sea of Thieves is when you have the loot of an entire ship and you’re in an outpost planning to sell it for riches. In the time it takes to bring all your treasure from your ship, one piece at a time, to the various merchants at your outpost, there is a good chance that hostile crews will board your anchor ship to exercise your hard-earned loot and get you The proud ship sank to the bottom of the sea.
However, Sea of Thieves players who have recently purchased their ships have discovered that there is a key new trick that can significantly reduce the time it takes to sell their loot, thereby avoiding the entire situation I just described. See, shipowners are granted access to a new merchant sovereign faction, which is essentially a one-stop shop for captains to sell all their loot. That’s right, you no longer have to go to different merchants to sell your loot, as long as you’re the owner of a ship. Even better, above Sovereign’s storefront is a harpoon-equipped platform that you can use to retrieve items from your boat with record efficiency.
If you haven’t figured out what exactly this means for Sea of Thieves’ new captain, check out this eye-opening demo from Mashed Potatoh on Reddit:
This adds a whole new utility to being a captain I didn’t expect at all, and it’s clear Rare has intentionally built that into Season 7. I can’t imagine any other reason to put a pair of harpoons on an elevated platform other than to give nervous lads like me a break when cashing out at an outpost.
