John Legend said Thursday that his friendship with Kanye West has broken down since he started supporting former President Donald Trump.
Legend tells podcast host David Axelrod August 4th episode of “The Axe Files” His longtime friendship with the rapper has broken down.
West — officially renamed Ye last year — made headlines in 2018 when he began supporting Trump, Said that wearing a MAGA hat made him feel like Superman. West also said at the time that he supports Trump because they both have a “dragon spirit.”
On the podcast, the legend said he and West “have open disagreements about running for office, supporting Trump, and honestly, I think maintaining a friendship is too much for us.”
Legend also said West was annoyed that he didn’t support his presidential bid, and Axelrod said he wasn’t “alone.”
“I’m not alone, but, you know, he’s not happy about it. We really haven’t been close since then,” Legend replied.
However, Legend said he believes West is “very real”, citing the latter’s openness to “who he is and his struggles with mental health.”
“So I don’t think there’s anything about him that a lot of people don’t understand,” Legend said of West. “Like, he’s been candid about his views, his struggles and everything he’s dealing with. I think what you see in him is pretty much what you get.”
Legend and West publicly feuded in April 2018 over West’s tweets about his political views. Legend texted West asking for a conversation about race and politics, but West repeatedly intercepted the texts and shared them on social media.
In response, the legend released a post on twitter The conclusion on race and American politics: “I love that great, brilliant artists have the ability to imagine a better future. But artists can’t turn a blind eye to the truth.”
Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen said in September 2018 that her husband and West had squashed their beef, but Legend “still stands by what he said”.
Representatives for West and Legend did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
