North America and Latin America in 2023, and anywhere else you can currently get HBO Max in 2024.

It’s been a somewhat turbulent week for Warner Bros., and a pretty nerve-racking one for anyone eagerly anticipating the studio’s upcoming projects. At the end of the week, the company revealed plans to combine its streaming services S, HBO Max and Discovery+ starting this time next year.

Warners Bros. Discovery announced plans and preliminary details of the merger on Thursday’s earnings call (via IGN). The new, unnamed combined streaming service will launch in North America sometime in the summer of 2023. The service will expand to Latin America in the fall, with parts of Europe where HBO Max currently resides in early 2024, followed by other regions later that year.

“Putting everything together is the only way we think this is going to be a viable business,” explained JB Perrette, president of global streaming and gaming at Warner Bros. Discovery. Perrette added that the goal of the service is to provide something for everyone in the family. Since Warner Bros. disclosed the call, some things have gotten a little more low-key. Think HBO Max has a “male leaning” and Discovery+ is more appealing to women.

What wasn’t discussed was what the new hybrid streaming service would be called, although it was hinted several times during the call that the HBO name would be dropped entirely. It appears that ad-free and ad-supported options will be available, with Perrette adding that they will be looking for options in the future for customers interested in a “free, ad-supported space.” No price was mentioned, but it was confirmed that Discovery+ subscribers will eventually have to pay more than they do now after the rollout begins.

Warner Bros. faced quite a bit of backlash this week after unceremoniously canceling the almost-finished Batgirl movie. While the finer details of what happened are a bit complicated, the movie appears to have a larger-than-expected budget as executives debate whether it should be launched exclusively on HBO Max or in theaters. The sudden rash move by Warner Bros. this week has some concerns about MultiVersus’ future, especially after the first season was delayed with little notice. Obviously, the game isn’t affected by what’s going on behind the scenes.
