Bungie is gearing up for Destiny 2 Showcase 2022 in a few weeks, but there are still some big announcements ahead. On the one hand, the game will see some major Iron Banner changes in Season 18 — not just the removal of the Rift.
Iron Banner is getting a killstreak.Lead designer Alan Blaine explains the inspiration and how the new mode incorporates this feature into the latest Bungie Blog Post of the Week“What if Saladin yelled, ‘He’s on fire!’ when you’re killing in a row, are you on fire?” the designer asked. “Out of that chaotic conversation, Eruption was born.” Eruption is the name of the new game mode — think Clash, but its streak can boost your energy.
When the match starts, you get a normal point and standard energy to knock down enemies. When you take out the second target in a row, you will start the Surge. At this point, you start to get a boost. Your body glows with 3 points per kill, 10% super power, and 20% grenade, melee, and class power. For the fifth kill in a row, you’ll start glowing brighter; this is called Primed. At this point, each kill is still worth 3 points, and each kill will give you 12% super power and 5% grenade, melee, and class power. In addition, your entire team gains 5% super power and 10% grenade, melee, and class power.
However, being Primed comes with trade-offs. A 15 second timer will start and when it reaches zero you will explode. This will kill you and reset your streak, but you can reset the timer every time you get an extra kill. This can be tricky, considering you’ll be flagged when Primed and fully visible at other times. They’ll get three points themselves for taking you out.
All in all, Eruption sounds like an interesting addition to Destiny 2’s Iron Banner lineup. Certain modes will also feature skill-based matchmaking with Season 18, but we don’t know if Eruption is among them.
