Chelsea Willing to pay a record £85m fee to move top target Wesley Fofana from Leicester City.
The Blues saw centre-backs Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both leave on free transfers in the summer – to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.
But Thomas Tuchel is keen to bring in another centre-back and has his sights set on 21-year-old Fofana.
Chelsea have made a huge £60m bid, backed by new US billionaire boss Todd Boley, but Leicester want to get the same deal they did for Harry Maguire in 2019. The same level of transfer fee.
Manchester United paid £80m for the England defender, according to reports sun, Chelsea ready to meet Leicester’s £85m valuation of Fofana.
Chelsea are looking to seal a deal for less but have rated Fofana so highly that they are happy to give Leicester what they are asking for.
That would be a world-record amount for a defender, more than what the Foxes collected from selling Maguire three years ago.
Leicester paid £36.5m to sign Fofana from Saint-Etienne and he’s in fine form in his first season as Brendan Rodgers’ side win the FA Cup – ironically , beat Chelsea in the final at Wembley.
He suffered a broken leg in pre-season last year until he returned with a goal against Rennes in the UEFA League League in March.
Chelsea missed out on French duo Jules Kunde and Presnel Kimpembe but are closing in on a £60m bid for Brighton’s Mark Cucurella.
Promising defender Levi Colewell, 19, will move in the opposite direction as part of the deal, but it is unclear if it will be permanent or on loan.
