Amazon has announced its intention to acquire iRobot, an autonomous consumer robotics company.

iRobot is best known for its Roomba robot vacuums and Braava robot mops, but also offers air purifiers, handheld vacuums and educational robots to help kids learn programming at home and at school. Amazon notes that iRobot has a “history of making customers’ lives easier with innovative household cleaning products,” suggesting this will be the focus of future iRobot offerings. Amazon also confirmed that Colin Angle will remain as iRobot’s CEO once the sale is complete, a sign that it intends to keep the company operating as a separate entity.
