When Prey hits Hulu on August 5, fans will notice some major changes to the Predator (Yaujta) design. It might have been a surprise to those watching, and the alien hunter certainly surprised the cast as well. However, there is a reason for this.
While Prey is billed as a prequel, it doesn’t involve any of the characters or locations from the previous films, so the people behind the movies can basically do what they want. This led to the creation of the Yaujta we see in the movie, which is more original.
“Because it was set 300 years before the original, the narrative required this thing to look a little different, in terms of how it was dressed, outfitted,” director Dan Trachtenberg told GameSpot. “But after taking that opportunity – saying it could be from a different part of the hemisphere, or what have you – this movie can deliver the same surprise as the original. What’s amazing about the first movie is seeing this drape It’s exciting to be there in the cape, then it’s exciting to see it in masked form, and then it’s exciting to see it in its final form. I hope it’s the same surprise, even for diehard fans . So changing it a little bit allowed us to make that happen. And then there were all the unique weapons, some things that felt like early iterations of things we’d seen before. And then, you know, some new toys for us to enjoy.”
But after concepting this new Predator and mapping out its look and technology, it’s still pretty surprising to see it for the first time. “Frankly, I was terrified,” Trachtenberg continued. “It came out while we were working on it, and while I’ve done some horror-oriented thriller type things, there’s nothing scary about you making it, you know? I have to say, see No. 1 Saw that one time in the woods late at night and it came right up to me and looked down at me and I felt like I was 10 years old again and I was really kind of scared. So it’s very impressive to view.”
For star Amber Midthunder, who plays Naru, the expert Comanche stalker, when she saw Dane DiLiegro in a Yaujta outfit on set, it felt completely different. “I said, ‘I can take it,’ Midthunder told GameSpot. “I literally said, ‘I can kill that. I saw him in the woods. Not by chance, but like, I didn’t know he was there, or you heard like, whispers and rumors that there was some kind of like, demo or act and tell or something, like a suit or something. I saw people walking away. When I went to see it, I saw a huge crowd. Then when I looked, I saw the Predator. Although I was amazed, just mesmerized by the suit, the details and everything. It is interesting. To me, that experience felt like there was a lot of duality. “
For Dakota Beavers, who plays Taabe, this is his first movie role, so he’s adjusting to a life of big-budget production. However, Dillegro, who appeared in front of him in a costume, made him stop. “It’s crazy,” Beaver said. “The first time I saw him, there were people whispering at the scene. Then I saw him walking through the woods. It’s kind of like the moment I just saw Bigfoot. You’re like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ If no one had told me (the Predator was on set), I would probably have reached for a blade. Because it’s very convincing. The suits they make are amazing. He’s a big old guy in a suit. Dane did it Nice. Also, the realism. Whenever they spray him with these things, every scene makes his skin look more realistic. So it looks really good.
Prey will arrive on Hulu on Friday, August 5th. In GameSpot’s Prey review, Mat Elfring said: “Prey is a movie about being hunted down and going up against it to help your people fight off attackers. It’s not an attempt to reinvent the wheel, but it does fit in nicely. The world of the Predator is firmly established as the second best film in the franchise.”
