OSHA inspectors visited three Amazon warehouses this week as part of an increasingly in-depth investigation into potential workplace hazards.
NBC Finance Report Federal officials are starting to focus on Amazon’s workplace safety concerns. Investigators from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) visited Amazon warehouses near Albany, New York, Denver, and Boise, Idaho, on Monday.
The workplace inspections were part of an investigation launched last month by OSHA and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. In July, OHSA officials conducted inspections at three other Amazon locations in New York, Chicago and Orlando, on the recommendation of SDNY prosecutors.
Last month, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said civil divisions were investigating reports of potential workplace safety hazards at Amazon’s warehouses in the United States. The investigation is also exploring possible fraudulent attempts to conceal harm from OSHA.
Current and former Amazon employees are asked to use online form Established by federal prosecutors. One question from the survey was: “Have you seen workers work in unsafe ways in an attempt to meet their productivity/rate requirements?” Another question was: “Do you think Amazon discourages workers from reporting injuries?”
OSHA recently confirmed to CNBC that it has opened an investigation into Amazon warehouses in Colorado, Idaho and New York. The spokesman said the investigations were the result of allegations of safety and health breaches at “several Amazon facilities.”
An Amazon spokesperson told CNBC that the company intends to cooperate with OSHA and its investigation. “We believe this will ultimately show that these concerns are unfounded,” the spokesman said.
Concerns about the safety of workers in Amazon’s facilities have been growing for several years as the company continues to conquer the U.S. retail and logistics industries.
