What else did we test

A bunch of mattresses are waiting to test the best mattresses of 2022.

James Brain / Insider

We tested 20 mattress covers for this guide. These are the ones who missed the cut.

What else we recommend and why:

Mattress Covers Under $150

Allswell 4″ Memory Foam: This CertiPUR-US certified copper gel-infused memory foam top sits in the middle of the pack in every test, which makes it a solid product, but nothing sets it apart. It’s easy to install, affordable, and fastened to the bed. Unfortunately, it has no warranty.

SensorPedic Bamboo Charcoal Infused Memory Foam: If our budget options are not available, we highly recommend this top-up, especially if you suffer from back pain. My back pain got worse when I started the test, but after two nights I felt fine. It didn’t make our guide because it’s not particularly good at cooling, and it doesn’t have a trial period.

Mattress Covers Under $300

Xiong Pro: Previously, the Bear Pro Topper was our pick for the best cooling mattress pad. It’s made from copper-infused CertiPUR-US certified foam that holds in place well and has excellent pressure relief. However, our new cooling top pick, the GhostBed, does a better job of dissipating heat. Still, if you can find the Bear Pro in stock, we still think it’s a great topper.

Nest bedding cooling: This hat lives up to its name because it gets hot when I get up. It also has poor motion isolation. However, it’s comfortable to sleep on, is made in the USA with CertiPUR-US certified foam, and doesn’t move around the bed. It’s on the softer side, so it might be a good option for side sleepers who like the feel of the top of their pillow.

sleep cloud core: This pad performed at least well in every test we ran. It sits on your mattress like a fitted sheet, keeps it in place and is easy to clean. It’s comfortable and supportive, and offers impressive motion isolation. The biggest downside is the relatively short 180-day warranty. Plus, it’s just somewhere in the middle when it comes to cooling and cooling.

Mattress Covers Under $500

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt + Cooling: This should be a high-end, better cooling version of our best top for back pain, but it didn’t perform as well in our testing. Despite its name, it’s also poor at cooling and costs $100 more than other Tempur-Pedic tops. However, it sleeps comfortably, has a removable, machine-washable lid, and comes with a 10-year warranty.

Satva Graphite: We pretty much included this top in our guide, but it’s not the best in any of our categories. Its average firmness was comfortable and supportive to sleep in regardless of my position. It does a great job of dissipating heat and comes with straps to secure it to the bed. However, it still moves, and the motion isolation on top is poor.

Birch Spiral Plush Organic: The birch topper is similar to our best overall pick. Both are handcrafted in the U.S. using organic latex, cotton and wool and have various environmental certifications. However, while birch is comfortable, I prefer avocado. If avocado is not available, this is a worthy substitute.

Mattress Upholstery Over $1,500

Airweave Mattress Cover: Until recently, the Airweave top was our pick for the best firm mattress top. However, it lost its place in our guide when the already expensive price nearly doubled. The Airweave is still a great product, but at this price point, you can get a brand new mattress. Tops that make your mattress firmer are rare, and we’ll continue to look for quality, affordable alternatives.

What we don’t recommend and why:

Perfect Fit Smart Top Hat: I really want to like this topper. It uses a small fan to promote airflow, keeping you cool (or warm) throughout the night. The app lets you customize your experience, and even heats the topper to wake you up in the morning. Unfortunately, sleeping on it is uncomfortable, really uncomfortable. It reminds me of the hard spot of sleeping on a sofa bed. I’m interested in testing future iterations of this top hat as their company (hopefully) makes it more comfortable.

8 Sleep Pod Pro Cases with PerfectFit: The coolest thing about the Eight Pajamas is that it allows your bed to be as hot or cold as you want. It pumps 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit water through the top to keep you cool or warm. The app tracks your sleep, and you can adjust the temperature to help you sleep through the night and wake up in the morning. We initially recommended the Pod Pro Cover, but after less than a month of use, it developed a leak that ruined the mattress it covered.

Awake Gel Memory Foam: This topper is super soft, like our budget pick. Since it’s made of memory foam, you’ll sink into the water, making it difficult to change positions at night or get up in the morning. We recommend our budget pick for its excellent cooling performance and motion isolation.

PlushBeds Natural Wool: PlushBeds Pajamas are the only fleece padding we’ve tested. It’s handcrafted in the USA with no chemicals. However, it smells bad and the smell doesn’t go away. It also absorbs heat and is too soft to be comfortable.

Sleep count DualTemp separate layer: This Sleep Number Mattress and AirFit Pillow is one of my favorites, I had high hopes for the chart but was disappointed. It pumps air through the top to heat or cool depending on your preference. I found it didn’t do a great job of cooling and was uncomfortable. At this price point, I expected more.
