MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Whit Merrifield said Thursday that he has been vaccinated against COVID-19 and will be cleared to play for Toronto when the Blue Jays return to Canada.
Merrifield acquired two minor league players in a trade with Kansas City on Tuesday. The two-time All-Star was in the starting lineup at midfield in Minnesota’s first game with his new team on Thursday night.
Merrifield was one of 10 Royals who went unvaccinated last month, preventing them from traveling to Toronto. When asked about his decision, Merrifield drew the ire of Kansas City fans, saying: “Something happened, I happened to be on a team that had a chance to play in Canada in the playoffs, and maybe the situation would be Change.”
Toronto leads the AL wild-card standings on its second attempt to make the playoffs in three years. The Blue Jays’ next home game is against Cleveland on August 12.
Toronto coach John Schneider said Merrifield will play in a variety of positions almost every day, most likely at second base and center.
